U.S. Under-20 Women Fall to Canada, 3-2, in Title Game of Cyprus Women???s Cup

LARNACA, Cyprus (March 12, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team lost in the championship game of the Cyprus Women’s Cup 2008, losing 3-2 to the full Canadian Women’s National Team.

The U-20s head home with four excellent matches under their belts against full Women’s National Teams, having beaten Scotland (2-1) and Holland (2-0), while falling to Russia (0-2) and Canada.

The U.S. U-20s defeated Canada’s full team by a 2-1 score at the 2007 Pan Am Games in the semifinals, but the Canadians were intent on not letting that happen again.

The young Americans did not have a good first half as Canada roared to a 3-0 lead in the first 37 minutes which included two goals from striker Christine Sinclair.

"Canada came out and took it to us early and often,” said U.S. head coach Tony DiCicco, who faced Canada many times as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team from 1994-1999. “I was disappointed by our first half mentality and some of our defensive marking. We spoke at halftime and committed to competing at a higher level and playing our style of soccer. I was delighted with the second half and the obvious improvement.”

The U.S. made the game close in the late-going, pulling two goals back in the final 15 minutes through substitute Brittney Steinbruch, but it was not enough to overcome Canada’s early lead.

The first goal came in the 75th minute after Michelle Enyeart took a shot that the goalkeeper deflected and a Canadian defender tried to clear, but kicked it directly to Steinbruch, who scored from 15 years out.

She tallied again with seven minutes left after a Canadian turnover in the back, slotting the ball into the left corner.

“In retrospect, the tournament has been a very good training event for our U-20s,” said DiCicco. “Whenever you can play and compete with full teams it has to provide confidence for the players."

The U.S. Under-20 Women are currently in preparations for qualifying for the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in Chile from Nov. 19-Dec. 7.
