CHICAGO (April 18, 2013) – U.S. Soccer, in partnership with Nike, will host a youth futsal invitational from April 20-24 at The Home Depot Center as part of a new U.S. Soccer player development initiative to encourage the country’s elite youth players to play futsal.

U.S. Soccer National Team coaches selected the top boys’ and girls’ clubs in Southern California to enter two U-13/14 teams into the event. The 32 teams will play three group games on Saturday and Sunday and the group winners will participate in the girls’ semifinals and final on Tuesday and the boys’ semifinals and finals on Wednesday.

U.S. Soccer Development Director Jill Ellis and Technical Advisor Rob Becerra will be on-site to identify players for the Youth National Teams. All games will be officiated by the area’s top futsal officials selected and trained by FIFA Futsal Referee Instructor Ed Marco.

During the event, U.S. Soccer will publish the second issue of Scout, U.S. Soccer’s free digital magazine dedicated to covering elite youth players. Fans can follow the event live via twitter at @ussoccer_ynt or by using the hashtag #TURNHEADS, on Facebook at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy page and on Instagram at ussoccer.

U.S. Soccer promotes futsal and small-sided games as key training tools for young players with aspirations of playing at the highest level. The smaller playing field, lack of walls and limited number of players creates an environment where players develop technical skills and make faster decisions.

U.S. Soccer will continue to incorporate futsal into future programming, including the creation of a winter futsal season for all teams participating in the U-13/14 Development Academy program starting in 2013-14.
