U.S. U-20 WNT Sweeps Two-Game Series against China PR with 5-1 Win in Florida
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (March 1, 2014) – Forward Lindsey Horan scored twice and 15-year-old Mallory Pugh added two more goals as the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team also benefited from a China PR own goal to win 5-1 in the second of two friendly matches at the USA’s training camp in Florida. The Americans won the first game 3-0 on the strength of two Horan goals and one from Margaret Purce.
On the day the USA and China were drawn into the same group at the upcoming 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, the Chinese took an early lead, scoring in the 7th minute to go up 1-0.
The USA equalized in the 15th minute when center back Cari Roccaro played a long ball in behind the Chinese backline to Horan, who brought it down on her chest in the penalty box before striking a smart finish low into the lower left corner from 15 yards out.
The Americans had to wait until the 51st minute to take the lead, but it started a deluge of four goals in 26 minutes that put the game away.
The game-winner came off an out-swinging corner kick from Andi Sullivan. Her service from the left side found Horan, who sent a six-yard header between the goalkeeper and the player standing at the right post.
Less than five minutes later Pugh put a Chinese center back under high pressure and stripped the ball at the top of the penalty box. She took a single touch and struck a shot high into the upper right corner from 15 yards out.
Pugh made it 4-1 in the 71st minute off an assist from Summer Green, who attacked down the left flank and slipped the ball between two defenders. Pugh ran onto it and bounced her first-time shot low and hard into the lower left corner.
The goals were the first for Pugh at the U-20 level in just her second U-20 cap after being called up from the U.S. U-17 WNT. Horan, the USA’s only professional player, scored her 19th and 20th goals in her 21st U-20 cap.
The USA added a fifth goal in the 77th minute ball when a Chinese defender inadvertently knocked the ball into her own net trying to clear a cross on the ground.
The next training camp for the U.S. U-20s will take place the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., in mid-April as the young Americans continue preparations for the upcoming U-20 Women’s World Cup at which they will face Germany, Brazil and China PR in Group B play.
