MetroStars Beat Tampa Bay, 3-0, in Third Round of U.S. Open Cup

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Tuesday, July 25, 2000) - The MetroStars defeated the Tampa Bay Mutiny, 3-0, this evening in the third round of the 2000 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup before a crowd of 5,183 at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y.

With the victory, the MetroStars now advance to quarterfinals of the Cup to face the Columbus Crew on August 9th at a venue yet to be determined. Metros 'keeper Tim Howard has recorded two wins in 2000 Open Cup play, yielding only one goal in 180 minutes of action.

The MetroStars, who dominated play throughout the first half, went into the break with a two-goal lead. The Metros got on the board in the 23rd minute on a goal by midfielder Mark Chung. Chung, who now has two goals in 2000 U.S. Cup play, one-timed Petter Villegas's cornering feed into the lower right corner past a sprawling Mutiny 'keeper Andy Kirk.

The Metros stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 29th minute after a brilliant goal by forward Alex Comas. Midfielder Roy Myers, who gained possession about 25 yards out from goal, led Comas into the Mutiny box. Comas touched the ball around Mutiny defender Steve Trittschuh and moved in on Kirk before blasting a shot into the far right corner of the net.

The Metros padded their lead in the 51st minute when Clint "I Love N.Y." Mathis scored his second goal of 2000 U.S. Open Cup play. Chung lofted a pass over the head of Trittschuh and led Mathis into the far side of the Mutiny box. Mathis settled the pass and made two touches on the ball before blasting a shot into the upper right corner.

Notes: Lothar Matthäus (back) and Tab Ramos (calf) did not play against Tampa Bay this evening due to injuries... Mathis made his return to the starting line-up after competing with the U.S. men's national team in two 2002 World Cup qualifiers... Chung and Mathis lead the club with two goals each in 2000 U.S. Open Cup play... Defender Daniel Hernandez left the game with a right knee sprain in the 66th minute and was taken to an area hospital for an MRI.
