U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team Pounds Haiti Select, 5-1, Behind Donovan's Two Goals, Two Assists
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Sunday, March 11, 2001) - The U.S. Under-20 Men?s National Team continued their final preparations for CONCACAF qualifying with an impressive offensive display against Haiti Select in a 5-1 win at Ted Hendricks Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Landon Donovan led the assault for the United States, scoring two goals and setting up two others before being replaced in the 56th minute in just his second game with the Under-20 team.
Haiti Select fielded two Haitian National Team members for the clash, but were outclassed by a younger U.S. side that was able to control the match in the first half through the strong central midfield play of Kyle Martino, Kelly Gray and Brian Carroll.
"I think today was a good test for us and a great chance to play with Bobby Convey, DaMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan again," U.S. head coach Wolfgang Suhnholz said. "I was happy with the overall performance and especially our ability to go forward. We are really beginning to gel as a team and are looking forward to getting to Trinidad."
Donovan, who is yet to play in an international match with the Under-20s, set up roommate DaMarcus Beasley for the first goal that began with Martino finding Donovan from wide on the right side. Donovan played a nifty ball into the box that Beasley ran onto and volleyed home over an onrushing goalkeeper from ten yards out.
After a Kelly Gray goal in the 22nd minute, the two roommates teamed up again on the third goal when Donovan beat the offsides trap and ran onto a through ball from Beasley. Donovan and Martino walked in alone on Haitian goalkeeper Naron Akins and after drawing Akins out of the net, Donovan played the ball to Martino who touched the ball into an empty net from five yards out.
Donovan scored two brilliant goals sandwiched around halftime, tallying the first goal of his Under-20 career in the 42nd minute with a brilliant individual effort. After receiving a pass from Convey, Donovan blew past two Haitian defenders before maneuvering around the keeper and firing into an empty net.
Donovan put the finishing touch on his scoring line in the 56th minute after Oguchi Onyewu found space on the right wing and curled in a low cross that Donovan one-timed into the right side of the net with his last touch of the match.
Haiti pulled one back in the 83rd minute when Daniel Jean bent a brilliant ball around the wall and into the upper right corner, giving Curtis Spiteri no chance to keep the USA?s clean sheet. In the game, Countess and Spiteri combined to make three saves. The Select squad almost doubled their output two minutes later but Ignatiius Moleka?s would only strike the post.
The Under-20s will wake up Monday morning with their full squad intact for the first time under Suhnholz, as Borussia Dortmund forward Conor Casey was scheduled to join the team late Sunday night. The team will train again on Monday, and on Tuesday will play the Miami Fusion in their final match before departing for CONCACAF qualifying in Trinidad on Wednesday.
The U.S. opens the qualifying tournament at the Dr. Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence in Tunapuna, Trinidad, against Guatemala on March 18, then faces Trinidad & Tobago on March 20 and Costa Rica on March 22. The top two teams from the group will advance to the 2001 World Youth Championship from June 17-July 8 in Argentina.
