CHICAGO (Feb. 13, 2012) – The U.S. Beach Soccer Team lost in its opening three matches at the Beach Soccer Worldwide Cancun Cup 2012, dropping results against Spain, El Salvador and Mexico.
In the first match of the tournament on Friday, the U.S. took a 2-1 lead against Spain thanks to two consecutive Yuri Morales goals. The Spaniards then rallied to score three unanswered goals to win the match 4-2.
The USA’s second match, against El Salvador, saw 14 goals as the teams tied at 2-2 and 6-6 before El Salvador pulled ahead to win 8-6 on Saturday. Three of the U.S. goals came from Morales, who was the lone U.S. scorer in the game against Spain, with Oscar Gil and Harry Abraham also getting on the scoresheet.
The U.S. faced host Mexico on Sunday in the last game of the Cancun Cup and lost 2-1 after coming desperately closing to winning. A Morales goal kept the USA’s hopes alive as the teams were tied 1-1, but the undefeated Mexico squad ultimately claimed the cup with a final strike in overtime.
