RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Oct. 6, 2008) – The U.S. finished a difficult 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup with an 8-1 loss to Portugal on Monday. Portugal jumped out to an early lead at the Maracanãzinho and never looked back, as the U.S. struggled to find their rhythm.
“Portugal proved why they are one of the top five teams in the world today,” said U.S. head coach Keith Tozer. “They came out and scored two early goals against us, both in the first and second half, and that was the telling sign. I take my hat off to what is a very good team.”
The U.S. kept the game close with Portugal throughout the first half, with Jamar Beasley barely missing on a pinpoint pass from Matthew Stewart. At halftime, down only two goals, the U.S. tried to muster a comeback but it was not to be.
Portugal scored early in the second half, and the Europeans' silky passing game overwhelmed the Americans. By the time Sandre Naumoski finally put the U.S. in the board in the 37th minute, the game was well out of reach. The U.S. applied pressure on the Portugal defense and capitalized on a giveaway by Israel. Naumoski was first to the loose ball and his one time shot found the top corner from eight yards away.
Despite the loss, the game was not without its hard performances. Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg made 20 saves in the U.S. net, while Stewart was industrious as ever in his running and creating space.
“The next step is learning from this, figuring out where we are in our program and deciding what we need to get to the next level,” said Tozer.
