Hagen Scores Twice as U.S. U-23 WNT Rolls Past Sweden 4-0

BORLANGE, Sweden (June 19, 2011)The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated Sweden 4-0 in its second and final match of a mini-tournament as forward Sarah Hagan scored twice, sandwiched between goals from Tori Huster and Casey Short.

The USA outshot Sweden 14-4 and put the match away with three goals in the first half. The first came just six minutes into the game after Huster pounded home a rebound after a Hagen header had been knocked down by the Swedish goalkeeper.

The Americans doubled their lead in the 14th minute off a corner kick. Kristie Mewis sent in the cross and the 5-foot-11 Hagen buried a header. Hagen got her second of the game and third in two games in the 41st minute. The goal scoring sequence came down the left side as Melissa Henderson and Short played a give and go. Henderson then sent a pass to the far post where Hagen was once again in the right spot to head home.

The U.S. U-23s added an insurance goal in the 76th minute as Henderson dug out a ball deep in the right corner. She played it back to Camille Levin who took a touch and then played a short cross into the penalty box which found its way to the feet of Short who was making a diagonal run into the box from the far side. Short hit a volley which looped over the ‘keeper’s head and dipped into the net.

The USA will play a friendly match against Sweden on June 21 and that will end the activity for the U.S. U-23s for 2011 as the players will then start preparing for their college pre-season training camps.
