Texans Top CASL Chelsea Academy 3-1 to Finish as Seventh Place U-15/16 Team at Finals Week

MILWAUKEE (July 16, 2011) – The Dallas Texans claimed seventh place among U-15/16 clubs at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week with a 3-1 victory against CASL Chelsea FC Academy on Saturday.

Andre Reyes earned Man of the Match honors with an assist on the eventual game-winning goal and later added a 50-yard strike of his own to give his club a two-goal lead. Brandon Aubrey netted the winner in the 15th minute, three minutes after Christian Soldat opened the scoring. Yanni Hachem tallied the lone goal for CASL in the 16th minute.

Reyes, who Texans head coach David Hudgell said was playing further up the field than normal, set the tone for the match in the first minute by creating space for a shot that went just wide, and three minutes later again just missed the target.

The match’s opening goal came in the 12th minute with Texans left back Nicolas Williams playing a long pass from just across midfield into the center for Soldat, who was making a well-timed run to get behind the back line. As the ball was coming down, a CASL defender had a play on the ball but failed to control or clear, and Soldat was then in alone to finish for a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Reyes curled a free kick from distance towards the far post, where Aubrey rose and got just enough pace on his header to beat Everett McCord back to the opposite corner for a 2-0 lead.

CASL, who was dangerous all day and in fact held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal, answered immediately after the second Texans goal with a skillful display that ended up with Hachem putting the ball in the back of the net. Fernando Castellanos set up the score with a deft flick that allowed Hachem to beat the Texans trap to make the score 2-1 with the match a little more than a quarter hour old.

Twice more in the first half CASL had chances to draw even, but Texans goalkeeper Collin Hall – making his first start at Finals Week – denied a pair of shots from Eric O’Brien. The first came in the 21st minute with Hall charging off his line to make the save. Later, in the last moments of the first half, O’Brien slalomed through the Texans defense before unleashing a hard shot that Hall got both hands on, which was just enough to push the ball off the crossbar before it was cleared.

To start the second half Hall gave way to Kevin Wright, but unfortunately for O’Brien the results stayed the same with a shot parried out for a corner in the 48th minute.

The pace of the match slowed a bit as the second half progressed and Reyes took advantage of some sloppy play by CASL in their own half to score the final goal. After intercepting a short pass just into the CASL half, Reyes looked up and saw that CASL goalkeeper Samuel Williams was off his line near the top of the penalty area. The Texans midfield sailed a shot that Williams could only get his finger tips to as he retreated into his goal.
