U.S. U-17 WNT Sweeps Two Game Series With Germany as Summer Green Goal Gives USA a 1-0 Victory

SUNRISE, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2012) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team defeated its age-group counterparts from Germany, 1-0, in the second of two friendly matches during a training camp in Florida, giving the Americans a two-game sweep while not allowing a goal after winning 2-0 on Feb. 6.

Like the first game, this second contest featured a tight match, but this one took on a physical and scrappy edge with the Germans out-shooting the USA by a slight margin. Both teams put together some good attacking sequences, but the U.S. had a bit more possession and managed to create the game’s one goal in the 36th minute.

The goal scoring play started when U.S. midfielder Sarah Robinson won the ball from Germany’s holding midfielder in the attacking third and played a chipped ball over the back line from just outside the 18-yard box. Green ran onto the service and hit a low, left-footed volley from the left side of the penalty box past the goalkeeper into the right corner.

U.S. goalkeeper Jane Campbell came up big with several saves toward the end of the second half to preserve the victory.

The U.S. team is currently preparing for CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifying that will be held in early May in Guatemala as the USA will try to earn a berth to the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan.
