Development Academy Select Teams to Face U.S. U-17 Men's National Team During spring Showcase in Sarasota, Fla.
CHICAGO (May 21, 2009) – Thirty six U.S. Soccer Development Academy players have been selected by U.S. Soccer National Team Staff to play a match against the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team as part of the Spring Showcase in Sarasota, Fla.
The matches will take place on Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23, with both games kicking off at 4 p.m. ET on the Showcase Field at the Sarasota Polo Grounds. Development Academy Technical Advisors Hugo Perez and Raul Diaz Arce will coach both teams, which consist of 18 players each.
With the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup on the horizon, U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team head coach Wilmer Cabrera and his staff will use the friendly matches against the Select Teams to evaluate the Academy players in a unique and competitive environment. All 36 players were born in 1992 or 1993, and are therefore eligible to participate in the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will take place from Oct. 24-Nov. 15 in Nigeria.
The Development Academy Technical Advisors and the U.S. Under-17 MNT coaching staff reviewed information provided by the National Team Scouting Network to choose the 36 players for the Select Teams. The National Team Scouting Network includes 60 members who have covered over half of the Academy games during the 2008-09 season. The Scouting Network meets regularly with national team coaches to help build the youth national team player pools.
The 36 players represent 27 different Academy clubs, with only seven teams sending multiple players. The Chicago Fire, currently undefeated in the Academy’s Frontier Division, has a trio of representatives in Patrick Doody, Manny Guzman and Charlie Lyon. FC DELCO is the only other club to send three players, with Max Kurtzman, Joseph Schmidt and Momudu Sluwar representing the Pennsylvania side. Arsenal FC, Baltimore Bays Chelsea, Chivas USA, LAFC Chelsea and Nomads SC are the other five clubs to be represented by two players on the Select Teams.
All but five players participate in the Academy’s U-15/16 age group. Forwards Zach Foxhoven and Chris Sendejas play at the U-17/18 level for Colorado Rush AS Monaco and Dallas Texans, respectively. Midfielders Nate Eggleston from Potomac and Brian Span from FC Westchester, and Chivas USA defender Brian de la Fuente also play mostly with their club’s U-17/18 squads.
The U.S. Soccer Development Academy Spring Showcase kicks off on May 22 and continues through May 26, with 218 games scheduled at the Sarasota Polo Grounds in Sarasota, Fla. The Showcase events are intended to provide players, coaches and referees with access to the latest U.S. Soccer resources. In addition to educational seminars and materials provided at the event, U.S. Soccer staff is on hand at all games to provide direct feedback to participants to enhance their educational experience.
The Spring Showcase is the second event of the 2008-09 Development Academy season following the Winter Showcase, which was held from Dec. 5-8 in Lancaster, Calif. Academy Playoffs will be held at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. from June 26-29 and Academy Finals Week will be held from July 10-17 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
