U.S. Under-17 89's Fall 1-0 to Brazil on Third Day of Nike Friendlies

BRADENTON, Fla. (December 3, 2005) — The U.S. Under-17 ’89 Men’s National Team fell 1-0 to Brazil during the third day of the 2005 Nike Friendlies in Bradenton, Fla. A late goal just before halftime by forward Alex sunk the USA’s hopes to pull out a win against the visiting Brazilians.

Tough tackles marked the even affair and both teams were relentless on the defense, each allowing just four shots on goal. Brian Perk was outstanding in goal for the U.S., coming up with a number of crucial saves in the match.

The U.S. had their best chance in the 27th minute when Josmer Altidore got his head to a Daniel Kelly corner kick, but his attempt skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Brazil took the lead just before halftime when Alex finished off a loose ball in the box. Fabio was sent through the U.S. defense and hit a close range attempt that was saved by Perk, but he was unable to get to the rebound before Alex slipped in and buried it into the open net.

In the 57th minute, Perica Marosevic served in a ball to Sheanon Williams at the back post, but the forward’s header went directly to the ‘keeper. In the 60th and 62nd minute, Marosevic had two good chances from close range that were blocked by Brazilian defenders.
