U-17 Men's National Team Draws 3-3 with Australia
LANCASTER, Calif. (Dec. 7, 2008) - The U.S. U-17 Men's National Team fought back from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Australia at the Nike International Friendlies in Lancaster, Calif. The series of matches are part of the 2008 Development Academy Winter Showcase, which is being held at the Lancaster National Soccer Center this weekend.
The game was preceded by a moment of silence in honor of Australia head coach Martin Crook, who passed away before the teams match on Friday morning.
Australia got off to the faster start in the game, taking the lead with their first meaningful attack in the seventh minute. Aussie forward Kerem Bulut's initial shot deflected off U.S. defender Shaquille Phillips and fell straight into the path of Australia winger Nikola Stanojevic. Stanojevic made no mistake, taking advantage of the fortuitous bounce to finish cooly to the far post.
Two minutes later the visitors doubled their lead, when Joseph Costa finished off a good Australian attacking move. Jared Lum laid the ball off for Costa whose finish mirrored the one of his teammate two minutes earlier.
Down two goals, the U.S. knew they had to respond quickly, and it took just a minute for Wilmer Cabrera's team to cut Australia's lead in half. Midfielder Victor Pineda's shot was spilled by Australian goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas and U.S. midfielder Dominick Sarle reacted first to poke the rebound home.
For the rest of the half the U.S. had the best of the chances, and in the 42nd the game was level. Sarle grabbed his brace when he again reacted quickest in the area. Defender Julio Arjona's cross was deflected up in the air, and Sarle pounced to tie the game at two going into the break.
In the second half, the U.S. took the lead when Joseph Gyau completed a mazy run by smashing home a shot to the near post in the 61st minute.
Seven minutes later, Australia would equalize from the penalty spot. U.S. Defender Emilio Orozco handled the ball in the area and the referee had no choice but to send off the unfortunate offender. Bulut stepped up and cooly stroked home the spot kick to level the scores at three.
Down a man, the U.S. did well to stay organized defensively, and they saw out the game to earn a 3-3 draw against Australia.
The Nike International Friendlies conclude tomorrow when Brazil takes on Australia at 1 p.m. ET.
