2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup Draw Quote Sheet: Tab Ramos

The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team was drawn into Group A with Spain, France and a team from the Confederation of African Football for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. U-20 MNT head coach Tab Ramos answered a few questions regarding Monday’s draw as the team prepares for the event kicking off June 21:

On Monday’s draw, which features the U.S. in Group A with Spain, France and a Confederation of African Football team:
Tab Ramos:
“I’m really excited for our players, to play against some of the best teams in the world. This is the reason why you go to the World Cup – to play against the best. We get Spain and France right off the bat and we’re going to start working toward our preparation for that.”

On what is next in store for the U-20 MNT’s preparation:
TR:
“We have a camp that starts on April 22 in L.A. That’s what’s next for us. Then we have a tournament in Toulon, France, toward the end of May, and that will be our lead-up for the World Cup.”

On whether this is a wide-open tournament with the likes of Brazil and Argentina not qualifying:
TR:
“Obviously the tournament doesn’t have those two big names there. Germany is also not in it. In a youth competition and the Under-20 level, it depends sometimes on the group of players that you have. I don’t think it’s necessarily a sign of weakness that those countries are not in it, but rather a sign of strength with the other teams involved.”

On the CONCACAF U-20 Championship and what the team took away from the runner-up finish:
TR:
“What I liked the most from that tournament is that we got better as the tournament went on and the players gained more confidence. We played together more as a team. So I’m looking forward to picking up where we left off as we head into the World Cup.”
