Under-20 Veterans, Younger Collegiate Stars Highlight U.S. U-20 Roster for Match Versus Jamaica

CHICAGO (Thursday, December 3, 1998) - With the 1999 World Youth Championship set to kickoff in Nigeria in exactly four months, U.S. Under-20 National Team head coach Sigi Schmid today named his roster for a 6-day training camp that will take place in Richmond, Va., next week. The squad includes a number of the top young collegiate stars, two professional players and three members of the U.S. U-20 squad that stormed through CONCACAF qualifying in August.

The camp, which will take place at the same time and in the same city as the NCAA Men's Division I Final Four, will be highlighted by an international match versus Jamaica on Saturday, December 12 at the University of Richmond Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET. The match will take place on the off-day during the Final Four.

Leading the U-20s will be NY/NJ MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard (N. Brunswick, NJ), who was instrumental in the USA's success during CONCACAF qualifying for the World Championship. Howard started in goal during the USA's convincing victories over Canada (5-1) and Trinidad & Tobago (6-1). Joining Howard are midfielder Matt Goldsmith (Roswell, Ga. / Furman) and defender Cory Gibbs (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. / Brown Univ.) both members of the USA's CONCACAF qualifying squad.

With many U-20 players still participating in the NCAA tournament, Schmid also called upon several players who have been with the National Teams program before. Isaias Bardales (San Jose / San Jose State Univ.) and Francisco Gomez (Watsonville, Calif / California Jaguars) both trained extensively with the U-20s in 1998, while Luis Gonzalez (Miami / Southern Methodist) played for the United States at the 1997 U-17 World Championship in Egypt. In addition, both David Boutilier (Sparta, N.J. / Rutgers) and Jamal Seale (Overland Park, Kan. / Wake Forest) have previously appeared for the U-17 National Team.

Several of the top U-20 players are likely to be participating in the Final Four Weekend with their college teams, as top squads Virginia, Stanford, Indiana, Clemson, Santa Clara, St. John's, Maryland and Creighton remain in the hunt for the NCAA's top prize.

The U.S. and Jamaica met earlier this year on July 25 and the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Miami, Fla. The U-20s have accumulated a 22-10-9 record thus far in 1998, and the Dec. 12 match is expected to be the final competition for the team this year. Beginning in January, the squad will begin intense preparations for the World Youth Championship, set to be played from April 3-24.

Under Schmid's guidance, a core of approximately 24 players will train nearly full-time with the U-20 squad, which will participate in a number of domestic and international training camps next year prior to the World Championship.
