Developing Better Recreational Players and Coaches with the Help of New Educational Tools from U.S. Soccer

In an effort to better educate the recreational youth soccer coaches, U.S. Soccer has produced new educational materials that are intended to improve coaches’ and parents’ understanding of the game.  The content has been produced by U.S. Soccer’s experienced technical staff and is aimed at youth soccer coaches of all levels.

To assist in the production of these new materials, U.S. Soccer partnered with Youth Sports Publishing (YSP), the official supplier of U.S. Soccer coaching materials.  The following resources have been printed by YSP and are available to help leagues and State Associations create a strong educational foundation among their youth coaches:

The all-new youth modules complete the effort of U.S. Soccer to provide consistent instruction to all levels of coaches in the United States. Modules have been created for three age groups: Under-6, Under-8, and Under-10. These modules are designed to introduce the parent/coach to soccer training techniques for youth players.

The goal of these modules is to provide the coaches and parents with the best information on the growth and development of youth soccer players. The modules explain the physical, psychological, and social characteristics displayed by children of specific ages. Understanding these basic development traits in young children helps the coach achieve positive results.  The modules emphasize many topics, including:  Modified Soccer Laws, Team Management Basics, Individual and Small Group Activities, Injuries and Risk Management, and Sample Activities and Games.

These modules inform the parents and coaches better than any of the previous materials available.  Each module is presented in an age-appropriate workbook. The curriculum encourages instructor interaction with fill-in-the-blank questions for clinic attendees. These workbooks may be purchased by anyone, however only State Directors of Coaching can authorize the purchase of the Instructor Manuals and the corresponding answer key.  The 64-page Parent/Coach Workbook is available for as low as $3.

The new D and E certification curriculum includes everything necessary for State Associations to run effective coach-training programs.

Now in wide distribution, this new material has been well received by State Directors of Coaching for its excellent content and quality presentation. With these new manuals, coaches are prepared to further develop the player’s technical abilities and their applications within the game.  Coaches will increase their understanding of the Principles of Play and how they are applied in the game.

The material in both manuals is organized inside an attractive binder that rewards coaches for their commitment to continuing education. The four-color binder includes tabs, zipper-pouch, pen, and dry-erase playing field. A special section is available for important State Association information. Curriculum is priced as low as $10 per manual (180 pages).

In response to an increasing demand for Spanish language materials, U.S. Soccer has translated and produced the new State “E” Certification materials in Spanish.

The “E” certificate course provides general instruction to coaching and organizing a team and introduces coaches to the methodology of coaching and the four components of coaching soccer: Technique, Tactics, Fitness and Psychology.

The manuals come with the same quality binder, accessories, and curriculum as the State D & E Manuals.
