FC Dallas Tops Baltimore Bays Chelsea at Finals Week

MILWAUKEE (July 9, 2011) – An early goal from Jonathan Top was all FC Dallas needed to top Baltimore Bays Chelsea in the U-17/18 Group 2 opener at Development Academy Finals Week.

Baltimore Bays Chelsea will look to rebound against Weston FC in their second game of Group 2 at 2 p.m. CT at Time Warner Field at Uihlein Soccer Park on Monday, July 11, while FC Dallas will face CASL Chelsea FC Academy at 3 p.m. at Pat Jones Field, also at Uihlein Soccer Park.

FC Dallas controlled much of the possession early in the game, and their pressure paid off in the 11th minute. Daniel Garcia received a throw in on the right wing and played a cross into the box. The ball found Top’s foot at the near post after the FC Dallas Homegrown signee beat his defender. He directed the ball with a soft touch, slipping it into the near post past helpless Bays’ goalkeeper Andrew Harris.

The Texas Division champions continued to press and move the ball around for much of the first half, but were unable to add to their lead. As the game wore on, the Bays began to gain momentum and increased their time of possession.

In the 37th minute, Baltimore forward Chris Somerville turned at the top of the penalty area and fired a shot that beat FC Dallas goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes but clanged off the crossbar. Minutes later at the other end, Flavio Guzman smacked a shot from distance that sailed just high of Harris’ net.

In the second half, Baltimore Bays Chelsea controlled the pace of the game as they looked for the equalizer. The chances came via set pieces, the best of the match for the Bays coming on a corner kick. Michael Gamble was able to leap up for a header and turn it on frame, but Cortes smothered the effort.
