Real Salt Lake AZ and North Carolina Fusion Draw in First Game of 2011 Development Academy Finals Week
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (July 10, 2011) – A late goal from North Carolina Fusion’s Mason Billings was enough to earn a draw against Real Salt Lake AZ as the two teams began play at Development Academy Finals Week.
Real Salt Lake AZ will next face PA Classics, who currently hold the top place in Group 2, on Tuesday, July 12, at 2 p.m. CT and North Carolina Fusion will play CASL Chelsea FC Academy on Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT. Both games will be played at Uihlein Soccer Park.
Despite dominating possession throughout the game, Real Salt Lake AZ was unable to break through the NC Fusion back line. Fusion allowed the ball to move around the outside of the field, but gave up little in the middle of the field or in the final third.
In the 22nd minute, Real Salt Lake AZ changed up its attack, looking for a quick counter and nearly converting. Romain Gall received the ball at midfield and with an excellent turn played Nick Semintedi on direct diagonal ball into the box. Semintedi hit a shot first time that went just wide of the near post.
Three minutes later, North Carolina Fusion had a rare opportunity in the first half on a counterattack of their own. Warren Marshall ran onto a through ball that slipped past the RSL defenders and touched the ball to his right, but his attempt to pull the ball back was intercepted by goalkeeper Jefferson Caldwell.
Minutes after halftime, Real Salt Lake’s Joshua Goss nearly broke the scoreless draw, receiving the ball at the top of the box and hitting a high shot that skimmed off the crossbar.
It wasn’t until the 51st minute that the Real Salt Lake AZ attack broke through. Quick passing got the ball to Gall at the top of the box, where he pushed the ball past the final defender and was tripped up. Referee Katja Koroleva immediately pointed to the spot. ussoccer.com Man of the Match Ben Spencer stepped up and coolly hit the penalty to his left, just out of reach of a diving Jefferson Caldwell.
Despite constant pressure from RSL’s passing-oriented attack, North Carolina Fusion would find an equalizer. Joining the attack, defender Mason Billings found himself at the top of the box and hit a shot that went through a crowd and sailed past Tyler Wilson to improbably level the score.
