Cal Odyssey and Derby County Wolves Face Off in U-15/16 Academy Championship Match

CARMEL UNITED WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY TITLE: Returning to the national championship game one year after winning it as a U-15/16 team, Carmel United SC defeated D.C. United 1-0 off a goal from Nikita Kotlov in the 29th minute. D.C. United almost tied it with a shot by Finals Week leading goal scorer Andy Najar in the 81st minute, but United goalkeeper Jon Dawson got his fingertips to the blast to push it onto the post to preserve the win.

IMG DEFEATS REAL COLORADO IN OVERTIME FOR THIRD PLACE: With a goal from Andres Acevedo in the 104th minute, Bradenton’s IMG Soccer Academy beat Real Colorado 1-0 to take home bronze medals for third place. Both Larry Jackson and Bobby Thalman played excellent in goal to keep the match scoreless through 90 minutes, but a defensive miscue on an IMG counterattack spoiled Thalman’s clean sheet and gave IMG the win at the end of the first overtime.

ONE TITLE LEFT TO BE CLAIMED: After an exciting final day of group matches on Wednesday, the U-15/16 Development Academy national championship game will see the Derby County Wolves play Cal Odyssey at 7 pm PT on Friday, July 17. From Clovis, California, Cal Odyssey was the only in-state team to make it to Finals Week. On the other side of the pitch, the Derby County Wolves from Livonia, Michigan, possess the U-15/16 Development Academy Coach of the Year in head coach Lars Richters. Derby County clinched their spot in the title game after only two matches at Finals Week, while Cal Odyssey was in control of their own destiny after two games and took care of business to get a needed draw on Wednesday to advance into the championship.

HOW THE WOLVES GOT THERE: The U-15/16 Derby County Wolves were the first team from either age group to clinch a place in the Development Academy championship match. The Wolves used wins against FC Dallas and Chicago Magic AS Monaco to take six points from their two opening games.

CAL’S “ODYSSEY” TO THE TITLE GAME: Posting identical 1-0 victories in the first two games, Cal Odyssey set themselves up well for the final day of group competition, even if they didn’t have the flash or intimidation of high scoring games. But that lack of attention is exactly how Cal likes to play, having flown under the radar into Playoffs to win their group despite being ranked as a No. 31 seed. With a hard-fought draw against then-2nd place Washington Premier FC on Wednesday, Odyssey earned the point needed to stay on top of the group and face off against Derby County in the championship match.
