U.S. U-17 MNT Earns Win and Draw Against Honduras

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (Aug. 11, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team earned a win and a draw against host Honduras during their six-game tour of Central America. Two goals from Jack McInerney and one from Carlos Martinez accounted for the USA scoring over the two matches.

Carlos Martinez and Soony Saad, who combined for a goal against Guatemala, reversed roles to open the scoring against Honduras on August 9. Saad played a ball over to Martinez at the top of the box, and Martinez lofted a ball to the far post to beat goalkeeper Luis Mejia and give the U.S. the lead in the 15th minute. In the 30th minute, Nicholas Palodichuk doubled the Americans lead by pouncing on a poor clearance and ripping a shot into the side netting.

Honduras battled back, however, and scored two late goals to come away with the draw. In the 70th minute, Anthony Lozano converted a penalty kick following a hand ball call, and three minutes from time, German Rodriguez perfectly placed a header to the far post that got past Spencer Richey for the 2-2 final.

On August 11, McInerney scored both U.S. goals. In the 24th minute, he fired a free kick from just outside the box to the far post to give the U.S. a lead. In the 64th minute, Lozano scored for the second-straight game against the Americans, running onto a ball over the top and beating goalkeeper Samir Badr to level the score. But it was McInerney again converting from a set piece, this time a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, that gave the U.S. a 2-1 win.
