Former U.S. Soccer Referee Don Byron Passes Away
Former U.S. Soccer Referee Don Byron passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4. He was 83.
The Pennsylvania native succeeded Eddie Pearson as the U.S. Soccer Referee National Administrator following Pearson’s passing in 1978. In the mid-1980s, Byron was integral toward the computerization of the Referee Program in assisting with the organization and assessment of the referees.
Byron was one of U.S. Soccer’s first nine national referee instructors, first appointed in 1978.
Byron also was the 1980 winner of the Eddie Pearson Award, which recognizes the distinguished contributions to the U.S. Soccer Referee Program.
