U.S. U-17s Lose Tournament Final to Uruguay, 2-0, on Monday in Italy; End Tournament with Strong 2-1-1 Record

GAETA, Italy (Sept. 16, 2002) - The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team lost 2-0 on Monday afternoon to Uruguay in the finals of the FISF International Soccer Tournament at Stadio Riciniello in Gaeta, Italy.  The loss comes after the U.S. had defeated both England and Yugoslavia, and tied Russia, en route to winning their group in the tournament being played to commemorate the memory of the victims of Sept. 11, 2001.

In their final match of group play on Sunday, the U.S. U-17’s topped Yugoslavia 2-1 in Formia, Italy to advance to Monday's final against Group B winnner Uruguay.  U.S. midfielder Eddie Gaven paced the U.S. to the win over Yugoslavia, scoring the opener and then setting up Guillermo Gonzalez for the gamewinner.  The U.S. finished group play with two wins and a draw.

After a scoreless first half, Gaven gave the U.S. the lead in the 42nd minute, scoring after a set up from Jacob Peterson.  On the hour mark Gaven assisted on Gonzalez’s goal.  Yugoslavia pulled one goal back in the 72nd minute.

The U.S. dominated play, outshooting Yugoslavia 10-3.  The Yugoslavian goalkeeper produced eight saves to keep the scoreline respectable.  U.S. goalkeeper Quentin Westberg came up with two saves to record the win.

Earlier in the tournament, the U.S. topped England 2-1 and drew 0-0 with Russia.
