CHICAGO (May 22, 2014) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team will travel to northwest France for two matches against its age-group counterparts on June 10 in Plabennec and June 13 in Plougastel as head coach Michelle French’s squad continues preparations for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
French will bring 20 players to France in what will be the team’s last full international matches before the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Both the USA and France have qualified for the U-20 Women’s World Cup. The USA is in Group B with Germany, Brazil and China PR, while France is in Group D with Paraguay, New Zealand and Costa Rica.
The roster features 17 players from the squad that qualified for the U-20 Women’s World Cup while winning the CONCACAF championship last January in the Cayman Islands. Additionally, four players on this roster are still in high school, including the youngest player on the squad, 16-year-old Mallory Pugh. Defender Kaleigh Riehl, a rising senior, and Tennessee bound-midfielder Carlyn Baldwin are part of the high school contingent, and co-captain Andi Sullivan, also a graduating senior, will attend Stanford in the fall.
After the trip to Europe, the USA will have a final domestic training camp in July before heading north to the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup which will run from Aug. 5-24 in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the tournament. (21 will make the Women’s World Cup Team)
“The chance to play against one of the top U-20 teams in the world prior to the World Cup is an incredible opportunity,” said French. “The experience and knowledge we’ll gain from these two games against France will push us to sharpen our focus and drive even more as we continue to grow as a team in these final stages of preparation for the World Cup.”
The roster includes USA’s lone professional in Lindsey Horan, a forward whose availability this year has been limited by commitments to her French club Paris Saint-Germain. Horan has scored 20 goals in 21 international matches at the U-20 level.
