PLOUGASTEL, France (June 13, 2014) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team swept its two-game series against its counterparts from France with a 2-1 victory that featured a free kick goal from Lindsey Horan and a headed goal by Margaret Purce that proved to be the game-winner.
The USA defeated France 1-0 on June 10 with a Savannah Jordan goal and these two matches were the final international games for the U.S. before it begins 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup play on Aug. 5 vs. Germany in Edmonton. The U-20 Women’s World Cup curtain-raiser will match the same two countries which played in the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Final in Tokyo.
The USA scored in just the 11th minute off a fabulous direct free kick from Horan, the USA’s only professional player, who plays in France for Paris Saint-Germain. The shot from outside the penalty area on the right side flew over the wall and beat the goalkeeper high into the right side of the net. It was Horan’s 21st international goal in 22 U-20 caps.
The USA doubled its lead in the 21st minute as its youngest player, 16-year-old Mallory Pugh, beat a defender down the left flank and dribbled into the penalty area before playing a cross to Purce at the far post. Purce finished with her head into upper right corner for her sixth international goal at the U-20 level.
France pulled a goal back in the 39th minute after Faustine Robert picked off an errant back pass and finished low into the right corner.
Neither team could find the net in the second half, as the Americans picked up their second victory over a talented France side in four days. U.S. goalkeeper Jane Campbell got the win, making two saves.
The U.S. team now returns home and will have a final domestic training camp in July before heading north to Canada for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup which will run from Aug. 5-24 in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the tournament.
The USA is in Group B with Germany, Brazil and China PR.
