U-17 MNT Blanks Faroe Islands 4-0 at Open Nordic Tournament

USA to Face Finland on Saturday in Event’s Fifth-Place Game

KOLDING, Denmark (July 31, 2014) – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team defeated the Faroe Islands 4-0 in its third match of the 2014 Open Nordic Tournament at Mosevej Stadium. McKinze Gaines scored two goals while Kai Koreniuk and Eric Matzelevich also provided a goal apiece for the USA.

With the victory, the U.S. U-17 MNT moves on to the tournament’s fifth-place game against Finland on Saturday, Aug. 2.

After dropping its first two games of the Open Nordic Tournament, the U.S. offense found its groove with three goals in the first 21 minutes. Koreniuk’s fourth-minute goal would prove to be the game-winner, and Gaines followed that up with a first-half brace, scoring in the 14th and 21st minutes.

With the match out of reach for Faroe Islands, Matzelevich capped off the scoring with the game’s final goal in the 82nd minute.

The U.S. U-17 MNT has a split squad competing at two different international tournaments. With one group competing in Saturday’s Open Nordic Tournament placement game, the other half of the U-17 squad opens the third Copa Mexico de Naciones against China PR later that day in Mexico City.
