U.S. U-17 MNT Clinches Quarterfinal Spot in Copa Mexico with 2-0 Win Against Mexico
U-17s Move to 2-0-0 in Copa Mexico de Naciones After Beating Mexico’s Second Squad
MEXICO CITY (Aug. 3, 2014) – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team won its second game at the Copa Mexico de Naciones in Mexico City, beating Mexico’s second squad 2-0 to sit atop Group C with six points. With its second tournament win, the USA has already clinched a spot in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
Mexico fielded a second team in the tournament because of the late withdrawal by Argentina due to the death of Julio Gondona, the late President of the Argentine Football Association. Mexico 2 joined Group C with the United States, China PR and Paraguay.
After recording a hat trick in the opener against China PR, Christian Pulisic scored his fourth goal of the group stage. His second-minute tally put the U.S. up early and would prove to be the game-winner. Haji Wright, who also recorded a hat trick against China PR, assisted Pulisic on the goal. McKinze Gaines scored an insurance goal in the 24th minute, with Matt Olosunde assisting.
Copa Mexico games are 70 minutes in length.
The U.S. has now scored eight goals and surrendered none in its two victories. Paraguay holds second place in Group C with four points, setting up a deciding match between the U.S. and Paraguay in the group finale on Monday, Aug. 4, to determine the group’s top spot. China PR has one point and Mexico 2 has none.
Following the group stage and Wednesday’s quarterfinals, the tournament semifinals take place on Friday and the final and third-place games will be held on Sunday.
