The second of three Development Academy U-14 regional events took place Nov. 8-9 at BB&T Soccer Park in Advance, North Carolina, near Winston-Salem.
The Academy stresses the importance of competitive games to enhance the players’ development. That maxim held true to form at the East Regional, with no team posting a 3-0-0 record during the tournament, showcasing a balanced field among the 68 games over the two-day stretch.
There was a group of clubs that did have an unbeaten run at the event. Seven teams went 2-0-1: Boca United Football, BW Gottschee Academy, Met Oval, North Carolina Fusion, the Philadelphia Union, Players Development Academy and Prince William. BW Gottschee earned three shutouts, posting a scoreless draw against Weston FC and 1-0 wins against Richmond United and Bethesda-Olney.
Among other notes, eight different goal scorers were involved in Orlando City’s 5-4 victory against D.C. United. Michael Lynch scored both Orlando City goals, including what proved to be the game-winner in the 66th minute.
During the regional, BW Gottschee U-14 midfielder Matteo Ritaccio and Met Oval U-14 midfielder Veljko Petkovic took some time to speak with ussoccer.com about the regional, as well as their recent experience with the U.S. Under-14 Boys’ National Team camp at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center in October.
