Chicago (March 26, 2015) – The U.S. Paralympic National Team dropped at 2-1 decision to Argentina in the third day of competition at the FOOTIE 7-Provoa 2015 tournament in Povoa de Varzim, Portugal.
The USA took an early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute thanks to a tally from Seth Jahn, heading into the locker room with the advantage. However, a very physical second half resulted in two Argentinian goals that sealed the victory over the U.S.
U.S. PNT captain and the only other goal scorer for the USA in the tournament, Kevin Hensley, had to be taken off in a stretcher early in the second half after being injured during the game.
"This was a disappointing result especially after going into halftime winning 1-0," said U.S. PNT head coach Stuart Sharp. “Unfortunately we picked up a bad injury to our captain that resulted in him being stretchered off early into the second half. The players stood up well to the physical nature of the opposition but in the end we were unable to convert our chances into goals.”
The U.S. PNT currently sits in fourth place in the five-team tournament with three points. It will wrap up the tournament by facing host-nation Portugal on March 27. A win against Portugal and a loss by the Netherlands, who faces Ukraine on the same day, would give the U.S. PNT a third-place finish.
“The tight schedule means we now need to flush this tough loss from our system very quickly in order to be ready to take on the host nation in 24 hours,” said Sharp.
For the USA, the tournament continues to serve as preparation for the 2015 Cerebral Palsy Football World Championships, which will run from June 16-28 at St. George’s Park in Staffordshire, England.
