CHICAGO (Oct. 8, 2016) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated the Venezuela U-20 WNT 6-2 in a match that was moved back one day due to Hurricane Matthew that hit central Florida.
Under sunny skies, 2016 Olympian Mallory Pugh scored three times, and picked up an assist, while Courtney Petersen, Jessie Scarpa and Kaleigh Riehl also added goals. The goals for Pugh upped her U-20 international total to 16 in 22 caps.
The USA was up 5-0 before fellow 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier Venezuela pulled a goal back. Pugh and Petersen opening the scoring with goals inside a three-minute span starting in the 14th minute and Jessie Scarpa made it 3-0 just moments into the second half. It was Scarpa’s sixth international goal and Petersen’s first.
Riehl, a defender, tallied her second international goal in the 58th and Pugh added another in the 76th before Lourdes Moreno scored to make it 5-1. Pugh wasted no time getting the margin back to five, completing her hat trick a minute later, and Idalys Perez added a consolation goal in the final minute of regulation time.
U.S. head coach Michelle French named 20 players to the roster for this final training camp before the USA heads to Papua New Guinea for the 2016 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup being held from Nov. 13-Dec. 3. French will officially name her 21-player Women’s World Cup roster following the conclusion of this camp.
In PNG, the USA is in Group C with France, New Zealand and Ghana and could face Venezuela in a cross-over match should both qualify for the quarterfinals as the South Americans are in Group D with Germany, Mexico and the Korea Republic.
The U.S. begins its World Cup on Monday, Nov. 14 against France in one of the marquee opening matches. The USA and France met in group play at the 2006 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Russia, with the USA winning 1-0, and in the opening game of the 2008 U-20 Women’s World Cup, with the USA winning 3-0.
