While the U.S. Men’s National Team’s domestic-based players (and Jorge Villafaña) wrapped up January Camp on Friday, the team’s foreign-based contingent had a full slate of matches with their clubs.
Some highlights from the past week:
On Saturday, Paul Arriola celebrated his 22nd birthday a day early and kept up his strong start to the 2017 Clausura when he tallied the fourth and final goal in Club Tijuana’s 4-2 victory away to Club Leon. With Leon trailing 3-1 and pushing to get back in the match, Tijuana caught the home side out in transition with Aviles Hurtado going on a long run before playing for Arriola in stride, allowing the Xolos right wing back to cleanly finish past MNT teammate William Yarbrough. With the strike, Arriola now has two goals and two assists in five matches for Liga MX leaders Tijuana this season.
Midfielder Joe Corona played 82 minutes, while center back Michael Orozco started but exited the match in the 20th minute after suffering a left ankle injury.

In Scotland, Arriola’s former U.S. U-20 teammate Emerson Hyndman kept up his hot streak for Rangers, putting home an impressive 36th minute volley in the club’s 4-1 defeat to Perry Kitchen and Hearts. Hyndman has two goals and an assist in four competitive matches since joining Rangers on loan from Bournemouth last month.

In Germany, Fabian Johnson continued his return from an ankle injury and helped spark Borussia Moenchengladbach’s second-straight victory in a 3-0 win against Freiburg. Entering the match in the 65th minute, Johnson’s header at midfield sprung teammate Lars Stindl on an impressive individual run that led to the game’s first goal.

In the English Championship, right back DeAndre Yedlin put in 90 minutes in Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw vs. Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday, but it was his weekend performance that earned rave reviews. Welcoming Derby County to St. James Park, Yedlin was strong in the tackle throughout the match, but made his biggest mark in second-half stoppage time when he cleared Darren Bent’s header off the line to preserve the 1-0 victory and keep Newcastle United on top of the English League Championship table.
UPDATE: On Monday night in Germany, MNT attacker Julian Green opened his account for new club Stuttgart, sending home a beautiful, 20th minute volley in Die Roten's 2-0 victory against Fortuna Dusseldorf. With the win, Stuttgart put a three-point distance between themselves and fellow promotion hopefuls Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig at the top of the 2.Bundesliga table.
