The third round of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup wrapped up Wednesday night with matches in Austin, Texas, and Portland, Ore. While Tuesday night had seen four of six MLS teams tossed from the tournament with losses to lower division teams, Wednesday saw balance restored in the form of victories for the Seattle Sounders and Houston Dynamo.

The third round of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup kicked off Tuesday evening and underdog squads owned the night. Four of six MLS teams lost to lower division teams, with the Houston Dynamo and Seattle Sounders still yet to play on Wednesday, July 1.

U.S. Soccer has determined the possible pairings for the quarterfinals of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The matches will be played on July 7, and feature the winners of the tournament’s third round matches, to be played on June 30 and July 1 across the United States.

With the chance to face one of the eight MLS clubs that will join the competition in the third round, the remaining 16 lower-division clubs showed their mettle Tuesday night during the second round of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Four of the eight games went into overtime, with two games needing penalty kicks to declare a victor.
