U-20 WNT Defeats the Netherlands 2-0 for Second Win at La Manga Tournament

LA MANGA, Spain (March 7, 2015)The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team picked up its second 2-0 win in as many games at the 10 Nations U-19 International Tournament in La Manga, Spain, this time taking down its counterparts from the Netherlands. 

Midfielder Mikaela Harvey scored in the last minute of the first half and midfielder Jordan Harr added an insurance goal in the 80th minute as the U-20s out-shot the Dutch by an 18-2 margin. 

The young Americans defeated Norway 2-0 on March 5 and will face the Sweden U-20 WNT on March 9 as they try to make it a three-game sweep at this friendly tournament. 

The USA opened the scoring off a set play almost on the end line as midfielder Emily Ogle served in a free kick from just outside the penalty area on the right side. The low service rolled to Harvey, who was making a darting run up the middle, and she finished low and hard from six yards out. 

With 10 minutes left in the match, Mallory Pugh played the ball wide to Megan Buckingham, who took one touch to beat her defender and crossed to the back post. Harr’s run was perfectly-timed and she finished with a first-time full volley. 

USA goalkeeper Casey Murphy picked up her second consecutive shutout. 

This is the first international event for this age group in the new cycle as the players focus on qualifying for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which has an age cut-off of players born on or after Jan. 1, 1996. As the U.S. players are in the first year of a two-year cycle, and all were born in 1996, 1997 or 1998, they are technically still U-19s.

U.S. head coach Michelle French called up 11 players currently in college and 11 still playing club for the matches against three countries who have all sent their senior sides to this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

U-20 WNT to Bring 22 Players to La Manga Tournament Starting Feb. 28

CHICAGO (Feb. 17, 2015) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team will bring 22 players to a U-19 invitational tournament in La Manga, Spain, running from Feb. 28-March 10. At the 10-team competition that features three matches for each country, the USA will face Norway (March 5), the Netherlands (March 7) and Sweden (March 9).

The tournament also features Switzerland, Germany, England, Italy, Denmark and Scotland. As the U.S. players are in the first year of a two-year cycle, and all were born in 1996, 1997 or 1998, they are technically still U-19s.

This age group is focusing on qualifying for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which has an age cut-off of players born on or after Jan. 1, 1996.

The roster features three players who were a part of the USA’s 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Team in midfielder Mallory Pugh, defender Kaleigh Riehl and midfielder Taylor Racioppi.

The U.S. U-20s will be preceded in La Manga by the U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team that will play three matches in a six-team tournament between Feb. 26 and March 2.
