Houston Dynamo (MLS) 1, Colorado Rapids (MLS) 0 (CENTRAL)
After a near three-hour delay, the first-ever U.S. Open Cup meeting between the Houston Dynamo and Colorado Rapids kicked off late Tuesday night in Houston. The Dynamo started the match strong, forcing Rapids ‘keeper Zac MacMath into a few early saves. The grass was still slick from the rain delay, and the players knew it, with both teams taking shots from all over the pitch in the first 25 minutes, however both MacMath and Houston ‘keeper Joe Willis made stops to keep their sides level. Yet, in the 43rd minute, Houston striker Mauro Manotas opened the scoring for the home team with a near post header from a Nathan Sturgis cross. Colorado nearly pulled back the equalizer just before halftime when Marlon Hairston split the Dynamo defense on the right, but saw his shot pushed onto the post by Willis.

Colorado came out of the locker room surging for the equalizer. In the 51st minute, Vicente Sanchez’s free kick from the left found Jared Watts, but he nodded off the near post. In the 70th minute, Dillon Powers slipped Marcelo Sarvas through the top of the penalty area before the Brazilian’s low, driven blast forced Willis into a diving stop to his left. Willis stood strong again in the 88th minute as Irish forward Kevin Doyle popped up with a powerful blast that the Dynamo ‘keeper parried to his left to hold the 1-0 victory. The win marked the Dynamo’s first against MLS opposition in the U.S. Open Cup since 2006. Houston advances to a Quarterfinal match away to the winner of Sporting Kansas City vs. FC Dallas.
