Chicago FC United (PDL) 1, Grand Rapids FC (NPSL) 0
It was a tense game with precious few chances as the two teams, perhaps eager to get down to action after their first attempt to play ended in a rain-out, cancelled each other out for the vast majority of the 90 minutes. With the exception of a handful of half-chances from set-pieces, there was little to savor at the Joe Bean Stadium on the campus of Wheaton College save a good amount of industry, commitment and fitness. And in the end, the game was decided – somehow fittingly – by an own-goal. Grand Rapids right back Peter Brown, a freshman at the University of Michigan, poked into his own net from close range in the dying seconds of the 90th minute to see his side go out of the competition and Chicago FC United move on to meet the USL’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the Second Round.
