FC Tucson (PDL) 2, La Maquina FC (Calif.) 1
An early goal proved crucial as FC Tucson of the Premier Development League (PDL) were able to hold off visiting Open Cup stalwarts La Maquina FC of the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) to advance to the Second Round. Jason Romero got the home team on the scoreboard in the second minute with one of the quickest goals in this year’s First Round, and FC Tucson were forced to deal with a very physical opponent determined to win every ball and with nothing to lose. Romero continued to be dangerous in attacking positions but La Maquina grabbed and equalizer in the 31st and had a go-ahead goal called back just before halftime. Goalkeeper Andreu Cases made a pair of saves early in the second half, and Alejandro Gonzalez’s header in the 55th proved to be the game-winner as FC Tucson now take on Las Vegas Lights FC (USL) in the Second Round.
