A pair of late goals sent FC Tucson through to the Second Round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup after a 3-1 defeat of the Colorado Rush. Tucson got off to a quick start with Gio Vasquez rising above the crowd to nod home and early corner kick in the third minute. Daniel Wooliscroft replied quickly for the Rush, capitalizing on a Tucson defensive error to know the match. It was a tug-of-war from that point until Tucson began to turn the screw with 15 minutes remaining. Pinheiro rattled a shot off the bar and Tucson created a handful of chances that went awry before Moshe Perez nipped in at the death of regulation to net an 89th minute winner. Pinheiro then put the match out of reach for Colorado, scoring on a breakaway to make it 3-1 while the Rush had pushed all players forward in search of a last-ditch equalizer. FC Tucson moves on to face the Colorado Springs Switchbacks (USL) on May 17.
