Summary

To help keep girls playing sport, the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport, in partnership with Nike, created Coaching HER®, a free, digital coach training platform. Coaching HER® offers online courses designed to equip coaches with the knowledge and skills to better support girls in sport. Backed by research and led by experts, the curriculum explores how female athletes experience sport differently, and provides practical tools for building confidence, fostering inclusion, and supporting performance.

Courses cover topics such as communication, leadership, motivation, psychological safety, and the impact of gender on participation. Each module includes interactive lessons, evidence-based insights, and actionable takeaways for immediate use on the field.

For soccer organizations, Coaching HER® is a valuable resource to help coaches create environments where girls thrive.

HOW AND WHEN IT CAN HELP

  • When clubs want to strengthen their support for athletes who identify as girls.
  • To supplement licensing courses with gender-informed approaches.
  • As part of professional development requirements for youth and adult coaches.
  • Helps coaches, teachers, and volunteers adapt their coaching to meet the unique needs of girls.
  • Useful when aiming to reduce dropout during critical ages (11–17).
  • Helps organizations show their commitment to girls by becoming a Coaching HER® Organizational Champion through a free license, which allows modules to be housed in their own learning platform (or accessed through Coaching HER®) and provides ready-to-use supporting content like monthly themes, articles, data, and events to share with their community.
  • Provides parents and caregivers with insights to reinforce supportive environments.

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THIS RESOURCE

The courses are practical, interactive, and grounded in real-world coaching contexts. They bridge research with day-to-day practice, making it easy for coaches to apply what they learn. We like that Coaching HER® amplifies girls’ voices, addresses the specific pressures they face, and provides actionable tools for coaches to create safe, inclusive environments.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING THIS RESOURCE

  • How are girls’ voices currently represented in your program design and coaching practices?
  • What barriers to participation exist for girls in your community, and how can coaches help reduce them?
  • How will you train and support coaches to address stereotypes and biases effectively?
  • What systems can ensure consistency in gender-sensitive practices across your organization?
  • How can you engage parents and caregivers to reinforce supportive messages beyond the field?
  • How will you measure impact in both participation rates and athlete experience?
  • The Coaching HER® platform is free to use but does require you to sign up.
