Summary

SWB’s 'FAMILY' Framework details over 36 specific, observable coach actions across 6 domains that create an inclusive environment that is healing-centered, linguistically-accessible, and skill-building. Created for and by SWB coaches by synthesizing best practices across all SWB Hubs, this framework gives coaches specific guidance on how to create a safe, effective learning space for all youth, regardless of soccer experience, culture, or language level. It focuses on the "how" more than the "what", leaving plenty of space for autonomy and creativity.

HOW AND WHEN IT CAN HELP

  • Organizations and coaches seeking inspiration or tools to measure and maintain program quality
  • Organizations and lead coaches looking for methods to evaluate and support the development of coaches
  • Organizations and coaches looking for ideas to establish a set of core coaching points that are integral to their program identity, specifically when it comes to using soccer to build trust, healthy relationships and safe spaces

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THIS RESOURCE

We believe this coaching framework is highly adaptable to different contexts where coaches are working hard to create safe, healthy, positive experiences for youth through soccer. We appreciate the amount of time and resources invested in establishing and honing this framework for Soccer Without Borders’ programs.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING THIS RESOURCE

We encourage you to make this resource work for you. Maybe 36 coaching points is a starting point that you can build on or simplify based on the unique needs of your program. What are the core skills that you want all the coaches in your program to develop? Do they fall into categories like FAMILY or is there another way to organize them? How can you measure the development of those skills through surveys, self- and peer-assessment, and/or coach observation tools? We highly recommend that you reach out to Soccer Without Borders for more support in developing a coaching framework, evaluation and training mechanisms inspired by FAMILY.
