U.S. Soccer fans were dialed in to yesterdays' FA Cup fourth round clash between Everton and Fulham that featured Tim Howard, Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey. The home side walked out 2-1 winners, with Donovan serving up assists on both goals for the Toffees. The win was the first for Everton against Fulham in their FA Cup history. Thanks to Darren Griffiths in the Everton media department, we have this reaction from the U.S. internationals.
“I hope the folks back home enjoyed watching the game tonight. It’s great for American soccer to have three players involved in an FA Cup tie like this. Clint has done ever so well for Fulham this season and we knew we had to keep him quiet to give ourselves a chance of winning. I think we did that and I’m just pleased he didn’t get to put one past me!
On the play of Landon Donovan:
“Landon did what Landon does very well. He hurts teams with his positional sense, his pace and his ability. The crosses for the goals were perfect and the guys made the most of them. We are just glad to be through to the next round. The object is always just to win the game and be in the draw for the next stage and hopefully we’ll go far."
“It was a bit of an American invasion tonight! It was nice to see Clint and in my opinion he’s been one of the players of the season so far in the Premier League. And, of course, we have Tim here – and it was a good night for the two of us!
On the FA Cup:
“We have a version of it, the US Open Cup, but there’s so much prestige and history about this tournament so to get the opportunity to play in it is really enjoyable. I think realistically that unless we go on an amazing run it’s going to be difficult to finish in the top six and qualify for Europe. This is our last chance to win something and you can see that by the lads attitude tonight. “
On setting up both goals:
“I try to put the ball into dangerous areas but the guys at the end of it have to do their job and Denis and Felli had two great headers. It’s just nice to play my part.”
