By virtue of this evening's result between Panama and Cuba - a 0-0 draw - the U.S. is now assured of a place in the quarterfinals. Though the placement is still to be determined, three teams have already been assured of a place in the all-important final eight.
Here is how it shook out:
The U.S. currently leads Group B with three points after topping Cuba on Monday. Cuba came into today's game needing a win to stay alive, but with the draw, they now have one point and cannot catch the U.S. With two teams advancing out of the three-team group, that's enough to push the Americans through. The U.S. can win Group B with a tie against Panama on Friday.
Meanwhile, Group A is down to two teams after the Haitian delegation had to depart for home. So the quarterfinalists from Group A will be Costa Rica and El Salvador, who also play on Friday to determine who will win the group.
The four quarterfinal winners will earn the coveted berths to the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.
