CHICAGO (Sept. 19, 2009) -- The U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team is set for an international training camp in Cobham, England, from Sept. 20-Oct. 1, as part of final preparations for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria. The trip will include friendlies against Chelsea and Arsenal Academies on Sept. 23 and 30, an international friendly against Gambia on Sept. 27.
Of the 22 players traveling to Cobham, which is about 20 miles southwest of London, 15 were part of the team that successfully qualified for Nigeria. Of the seven remaining players, only one is not currently part of the team’s Residency program in William Packwood. Packwood, who trained with the U.S. team in Bradenton in December 2008, will meet the team in England, where he trains with Birmingham City’s Academy. Forward Victor Chavez is in his first semester in the Residency Program, while Alfred Koroma, the only player born in 1994 on the roster, will be participating in his first foreign training camp with the team.
All of the players will be vying for one of 21 places on the final World Cup roster.
The U.S., the only country to qualify for all 13 FIFA U-17 World Cups dating back to 1985, will play the first two group games against Spain on Oct. 26 and Malawi on Oct. 29, in Kano before moving to Ijebu-Ode to close out the first round against UAE on Nov. 1.
