CHICAGO (Aug. 2, 2012) – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team is set to play its fourth international tournament of the calendar year when it travels to
Spain at the end of September to compete in the 2012 AGS Cup from Sept. 29 through Oct. 6 in L'Alfàs del Pi on the country’s Mediterranean coast.
The U.S., which finished in second place at the 2011 AGS Cup, was placed into Group B of the tournament along with the United Arab Emirates, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Group A features the USA’s CONCACAF rivals Mexico and Canada paired with Morocco and Russia.
Tournament play begins on Sept. 29 as the U.S. squares off against Azerbaijan at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET). The U.S. faces Georgia on Sept. 30 at 12 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET) and ends group play on Oct. 1 against the United Arab Emirates at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET).
Depending on the team’s results in group play, the U.S. will contest a playoff match against a team from Group A on either Oct. 3 or 4 before finishing the tournament with a placement match on Oct. 6.
In last year’s edition of the tournament, the U.S. drew Mexico 1-1 in the opening game, followed that result up with another 1-1 draw against the United Arab Emirates and defeated Russia 2-0. The tournament format was different from this year’s version as there were just five teams and the side finishing with the most points was crowned champion. Mexico earned the title in 2011 with the U.S. finishing in second place following a 5-0 win against a regional Spanish side in the team’s final match.
U.S. U-17 forward Wesley Wade, who recently won the U-15/16 U.S. Soccer Development Academy championship this season with the New York Red Bulls Academy, earned the tournament’s Golden Boot with four goals.
The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team roster for the 2012 AGS Cup will be announced at a later date.
UPDATE (Sept. 29, 2012): Following the opening win against Morocco, the U.S. will play four more matches. The first match will be against the United Arab Emirates at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET) on Sunday, Sept. 30.
