Nine NASL (Division II) Clubs Join in the Tournament’s Third Round Set to Take Place May 27
CHICAGO (May 14, 2015) –U.S. Soccer today announced the potential pairings and host scenarios for the Third Round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Third Round will mark the opening stage of the tournament for the nine domestic North American Soccer League (Division II) clubs.
Home teams are determined by a random selection process among those clubs that have applied to host and whose venues meet the minimum tournament requirements.
Former Illinois State Soccer Association President Branko Ilic was on hand as the witness during the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Third Round draw process Thursday morning at U.S. Soccer House in Chicago.
The U.S. Open Cup Third Round kicks off May 27 and features the 21 Second Round winners and nine Division II (NASL) clubs whose teams are matched geographically to play the winner of a specific Second Round pairing. The winners of the 12 remaining Second Round matches not paired with a Division II side are paired against each other geographically.

Tournament Format, Match Dates and Pairings: The 2015 U.S. Open Cup will be conducted on a single-elimination, one-game-knockout basis utilizing a tiered-bracket format. Teams will be paired geographically. In the event that three or more teams are from the same proximity, pairings for these teams will be made by random selection. Pairings will be arranged to prevent the possibility of a lower division team playing a parent club (e.g. Portland Timbers 2 [USL] will not be pitted against the Portland Timbers [MLS], should both teams be in the competition in the same round) except for the Final.
