POTY 2015: Making the Case for DeAndre Yedlin
On Monday, U.S. Soccer announced the five nominees for 2015 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year. This year's nominees include midfielder Michael Bradley, forward Clint Dempsey, goalkeeper Brad Guzan, and defenders Fabian Johnson and DeAndre Yedlin. This week, ussoccer.com has made a case to the voting committee for each of the candidates. Today is DeAndre Yedlin.
DeAndre Yedlin is the youngest candidate for 2015 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year at just 22 years old. After a breakout performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup after which he earned the Young Player of the Year award, Yedlin played in a team-high 19 of 20 matches with the MNT this year. Using his tremendous pace, the Seattle. Wash., native finished second on the team in assists, including a crucial helper on John Brooks’ goal to bring the USA within one against the Netherlands on June 5.
The winger also came up with a crafty assist in the MNT’s first 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Nov. 13, sending a quick elevated pass to Bobby Wood’s head and into the goal for the game-tying tally.
Yedlin found a new club home at the start of the English Premier League campaign on loan from Tottenham to Sunderland, where he has been a consistent fixture in the lineup.
