CHICAGO (June 2, 2016) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated the Sweden Under-23 WNT in the first of three matches at the four-team U-23 Women’s Nordic Tournament taking place at the St. George’s Park Football Centre, the National Training Center of the England FA, in Burton-upon-Trent located about 130 miles north of London.
University of Florida striker Savannah Jordan scored twice, including a goal in just the third minute, while Duke midfielder Toni Payne scored seven minutes into the second half.
The first goal came off a quick counter-attack as Harvard’s Margaret Purce played a pass behind the Sweden defense and Jordan finished off a breakaway from 13 yards out into the lower right corner.
Jordan’s second goal in the 24th minute came after she held off a defender with her back to the goal at the top of the penalty box and then played a give-and-go with Purce. Jordan beat the on-rushing goalkeeper to the return pass, but her first attempt from close range bounced off the right post. She recovered the rebound, spun toward goal and finished from a sharp angle to make it 2-0.
The third goal came after Caroline Flynn of Nebraska went on a fantastic dribbling run down the left side. She beat several defenders to get to the end line before cutting a pass on the ground back to Payne who one-touched the ball with the inside of her right foot to finish into the lower right corner from eight yards out.
These were the first U-23 international goals for Jordan (she scored six times at the U-20 level) and the second U-23 goal for Payne.
Sweden pulled a goal back in the 77th minute, but could not put any more past U.S. goalkeeper Jane Campbell.
The USA will face the U-23 Women’s National Teams of Norway (June 4) and England (June 7) to finish the competition.
The U.S. U-23s (and formerly U-21s) have a long history of traveling to northern Europe during the summer and for many years participated in the eight-team Nordic Cup, winning the competition on quite a few occasions, before the tournament ended in 2009.
