Midfielder Catarina Macario Ruled Out of U.S. Women’s National Team Roster for Matches Against Sweden and France

CHICAGO (April 2, 2021) – Midfielder Catarina Macario will not join the U.S. Women’s National Team roster for the two upcoming matches in Europe during the April FIFA international window.

The USA will face Sweden on April 10 (FOX at 1 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. local) at Friends Arena in Stockholm and then will play France on April 13 at Stade Océane in Le Havre (ESPN 2 at 3 p.m. ET / 9 p.m. local).

Olympique Lyonnais, Macario’s professional club in France, had a COVID-19 outbreak earlier this week and numerous players have so far tested positive. Due to the positive tests and the subsequent contract tracing, the entire Lyon team has been directed to quarantine.

“While Cat has not tested positive, she is currently in the required quarantine period, and by the time she is able meet those requirements, travel to Sweden, and go through our Covid protocols, it would be right before the first game, and she wouldn’t have trained for a solid 10 days,” said U.S. head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “We only have a few trainings during this trip, so we felt it was in Cat’s best interest for her to remain in Lyon and make sure she ramps her fitness back up with her club once her quarantine ends.”

Due to its Covid outbreak, Lyon was forced to request a re-scheduling of the second leg of UEFA Women’s Champions League Quarterfinal clash with rival PSG. Lyon won the first leg, 1-0, on March 24 and the second leg was scheduled for March 31 but has now been moved to April 18.

With Washington Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan added to the travel roster as previously announced, the USA will have 23 total players in Europe.
