Q&A: Alex Zendejas Discusses His First Call-Up To The USMNT
Zendejas Previously Spent Time with the U.S. U-17 Men’s Youth National Team
After several years away from the U.S. National Team environment, forward Alex Zendejas earned his first call-up to the USMNT after Anthony Hudson named his 24-man roster for January camp. As he prepares to wear the USA crest again, and for the first time with the senior team, ussoccer.com caught up with him ahead of the friendly match against Serbia on Wednesday.

ussoccer.com: For those who may not be familiar with your story, can you tell us where you’re from and where you grew up?

Alex Zendejas: I’m Alex Zendejas, I was born in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and I grew up in El Paso, Texas.

ussoccer.com: How are you eligible to represent the USA despite being born in Mexico?
Como es que puedes representar a Estados Unidos aunque naciste en México?
AZ: Yeah, my dad took his citizenship test when I was underage, so because of that I automatically got a U.S. passport. I think I was around 13 years old when that happened.
Si, mi papá consiguió su nacionalidad estadounidense cuando yo era menor de edad, y por eso a mí me dieron pasaporte estadounidense automáticamente. Creo que tenía más o menos 13 años cuando sucedió eso.
ussoccer.com: Tell us a little bit about your experience with the U-17 Men’s Youth National Team. Do you have any favorite moments or memories from that time?
Platícanos un poco sobre tu experiencia con la selección de Estados Unidos sub-17. Tienes algún momento o recuerdo favorito de esa época?
AZ: Probably some of the best moments I’ve had were in the U-17 Residency Program. That built up to the Nike Friendlies and from there, that built up to the U-17 World Cup in Chile, and it was all just sharing moments with the guys that I played with and who are now playing at the senior level. Guys like Christian (Pulisic), Weston (McKennie), Tyler (Adams), Haji (Wright), a good amount of those guys. Those were some of my favorite moments.

Eso llevó a los Nike Friendlies y de ahí llevó al mundial sub-17 en Chile, y compartí muchos momentos con mis compañeros y que ahora juegan en el primer equipo. ussoccer.com: It’s been a long journey to get to where you are. What does it mean to you to get your first call-up with the U.S. Men’s National Team?
Ha sido un camino largo para llegar a donde estás. ¿Qué significa para ti ser convocado al primer equipo por primera vez?
AZ: It’s exciting and I’m very happy. It’s been a while since I’ve worn this shirt but I’m excited and trying to take advantage of any opportunities I get, and hopefully it all goes well.

ussoccer.com: How has growing up with two cultures – Mexican and American – shaped you as a person and as a player?
Como fue tu experiencia creciendo con dos culturas – la mexicana y la estadounidense – y como te formó como persona y jugador?
AZ: I love it. My parents and my whole family are from Mexico, but living in both sides and experiencing both cultures, you get to see and appreciate the differences that they have, but I love all of it. The way we live things, the food, in both the States and Mexico; it’s pretty amazing and I enjoy it to the max, honestly.
Me encanta. Mis padres y toda mi familia son de México, pero vivir en ambos lados y vivir las dos culturas te permite ver y apreciar las diferencias entre las dos, pero todo eso me encanta. La manera en la que vivimos las cosas, la comida, en ambos Estados Unidos y México; es increíble y honestamente lo disfruto al máximo.
ussoccer.com: Several USMNT players have spoken about the importance of the diversity in this group. How important is it for you to represent Mexican-Americans and Hispanic Americans when you put on this jersey?

AZ: I feel proud. It’s an honor to be here and not everyone has the luck and opportunity to be here, so honestly just being here has made me so happy and meeting up with the guys that I’ve known since I was little. And now I’m just trying to take advantage of the opportunity.

AZ: Obviously it’s an international game and I’m excited about that because it’s different than the club level, but I’m just trying to enjoy it, to enjoy the moment and being with my teammates because it’s been a while since I’ve seen them, so it’s a very surreal moment.
