PUNTA DEL ESTE, Uruguay (October 14, 2025) - U.S. Men’s Cerebral Palsy (CP) National Team midfielder Jonah Meyer-Crothers’ goal in second-half stoppage time helped the USA earn a 1-1 draw with Argentina in the final match of Group A play at the 2025 IFCPF Copa America. After a tight and scoreless 50 minutes, Argentina took the lead with nine minutes to play, but Meyer-Crothers leveled two minutes into added time.
The draw left the USA and Argentina tied atop the group with four points, goal difference (+10) and goals scored (11). The winner was decided in a rare ‘drawing of lots,’ where the USA’s name card was selected in a blind draw. As the winner of Group A, the U.S. will play the second-place team from Group B, Canada, in the Semifinals on Thursday, October 16 (2 p.m. ET; IFCPF YouTube). Argentina will play Group B winner Brazil in the other semifinal.
In a growing rivalry after the teams met in major competitions in each of the last two years, this match again was well contested. Argentina had the first key chance when right winger German Romussi pushed forward and shot from 30 yards, but USA goalkeeper Marc Estrella was up to the task with a nice diving save to his right to parry the ball wide for a corner kick.
The USA’s first chance came in the 19th minute when midfielder Frankie Lowery lifted a free kick from the right side to the back post. Teammate Ben Lindau timed his run, but his contested header went just wide.
The U.S. was the more threatening side after the break, though chances remained limited. Nearly 10 minutes in, Meyer-Crothers controlled a diagonal ball on the left, then cut to his right and hit a solid shot that Argentina’s Mariano Cortes headed out for a corner. Meyer-Crothers later did well to track back and pressure Romussi at the back post to prevent a shot on goal.
Argentina took advantage of its best opportunity with less than ten minutes to play. A minute after coming on, Mariano Morana took possession near midfield after Lindau slipped and started a fast counter, pushing the ball left to Carlos Carrizo. Lone defender Jacob Crumbley stepped to, but Carrizo centered the ball to an unmarked Batista Caboneti who calmly finished past Estrella.
Meyer-Crother nearly tied the match twice after his header off a Lindau corner was saved spectacularly by Argentina ‘keeper Facundo Godoy, and a hard volley from a long Crumbley throw-in clanking off the left post. However, the play would work the next time.
Deep in stoppage time, Crumbley again advanced the ball forward and flung a throw in from the right side toward the center. With his back to goal, second-half substitute Shea Hammond made the slightest of touches on it with his right foot to push past his mark, and Meyer-Crothers lunged forward to equalize from six yards out.
