LA MANGA, Spain (April 7, 2018) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated its counterpart from England, 1-0, in its second match of the Women’s U-23 La Manga Tournament.
Forward Sophia Smith scored the game’s lone goal in the 36th minute to give her five goals in her last three U-20 internationals, which included two scores in a 4-1 win against the Sweden U-23 WNT on April 5 in the first game of this friendly tournament. The goal gave Smith 14 career U-20 goals in 19 games.
The USA will face the Italy U-23 WNT on April 9 to finish the competition. The games are part of a friendly tournament that also features the U-23 WNTs of France, Norway and Sweden and the U-20 WNTs of England, China and Norway.
Smith, the 2017 U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year, scored via a nice assist from midfielder Savannah DeMelo, who slipped a through ball into the right sight of the penalty box. Smith got behind the defense and blasted her shot into the upper left corner.
