USMNT Rewind: Josh Sargent Delivers Assist for Werder Bremen; Cristian Roldan Bags Brace for Seattle Sounders

Sargent has a goal and assist in three matches for Bremen this season; Aaronson, Altidore, Lletget, Morris, Roldan and Yueill find the back of the net in MLS

Josh Sargent continued his productive start for Bundesliga side Werder Bremen during the weekend.

The U.S. Men's National Team forward recorded his first assist of the campaign, setting up the opening goal of a 3-1 away triumph against Schalke on Saturday. The O’Fallon, Mo. product rose near the penalty spot to nod down a corner kick which strike partner Niclas Füllkrug redirected from close range in the 22nd minute. Füllkrug went onto register a hat-trick.

Sargent, 20, has started all three of Bremen's contests across all competitions, scoring a goal in a 2-0 DFB-Pokal victory against Carl Zeiss on Sept. 12.

After playing in the midfield last week, Sargent returned to the front line and played 84 minutes. He placed three shots on goal.

On the domestic front, Seattle Sounders FC's 3-1 triumph at the LA Galaxy on Sunday turned out to be a goal-scoring bonanza for USMNT players.

Cristian Roldan paced Seattle with a brace, scoring in the 12th and 61st minutes, the latter a delightful display of touch. Those goals were sandwiched around a 38th-minute finish by Jordan Morris (seven goals, six assists), who also set up the first for Roldan.

Sebastian Lletget pulled one back for the hosts in the 88th minute to avoid a shutout. The win kept Seattle (7-3-3, 34 points) atop the Western Conference standings by goal differential over the Portland Timbers.

USMNT midfielder Jackson Yueill collected a dramatic stoppage time winner for San Jose Earthquakes in their 2-1 comeback victory against LAFC. Deadlocked with about minute left to play in added time, ‘Quakes midfielder Cristian Espinoza cut towards the end line on the right before centering a pass for Yueill who backheeled past Pablo Sisiniega from the six.

The goal was Yueill’s first of the season and helped San Jose snap an eight-game winless streak.

A few other highlights from the weekend:

  • Jozy Altidore sparked a comeback for Toronto FC, tallying a 48th minute equalizer in Toronto FC’s 3-1 victory against league-leading Columbus Crew SC. The effort from outside of the box was Altidore’s second of the season.

  • Brenden Aaronson put an exclamation point on the Philadelphia Union's 3-0 win against Inter Miami CF. Six minutes into second-half stoppage time, the 19-year-old forced a turnover in midfield and went on an individual run before slotting his effort past Luis Robles. Aaronson has four goals and three assists in 14 matches this season.

  • In Sweden, 2014 USMNT World Cup veteran Aron Johannsson continued his strong return to the field for Hammarby, scoring twice in the club’s 3-1 victory at Falkenberg. Johannsson registered what would stand as the game-winner in the 66th minute before tallying a game-icing penalty kick three minutes into second-half stoppage time. Johannsson has scored eight times in his last nine matches.

  • At midweek in England, USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen made his Manchester City debut in the club’s 2-1 Carabao Cup win against Bournemouth. Steffen’s key moment in the match came just before the hour mark, when he raced outside of his box to thwart Sam Surridge’s breakaway.
